The Burlington-Edison boys’ golf team sent a trio of golfers to the second day of the Class 2A state tournament.

Conrad Brown was tied for fifth after the first day at Liberty Lake Golf Course in Spokane, and will be joined in final-round play today by teammates Erik Altenhofen and Andrew Henry.

Brown shot a 77 to tie for fifth with Sedro-Woolley’s Keenan Hofstad, who will join Brown in a group today that will include Othello’s Patrick Azevedo, a former state champion.

Henry’s 82 put him in a tie for 20th, and Altenhofen’s 85 put him in a tie for 38th.

“They played pretty well to make it to the second day. That’s been our goal coming over here. We could have played better, but we had some good things happen to build confidence going into tomorrow,” Tigers coach Charlie Herzberg said.

Anacortes golfer Brendan Hodgson shot an 86, Sedro-Woolley’s Riley Hoyle a 90 and Burlington-Edison’s Brayden Konkle a 92.

All three failed to advance to the second day.

Jordan Medcalf of Lynden and Paul Jacobsen of Sequim tied for the first-round lead with 73.

SPOKANE — Kyle Cooley shot an opening-round 71 at The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course, good for a tie for fourth place going into today’s final round.

Cooley’s first round left him tied with Drew Warford of Mount Si and Colby Watkins of Tahoma.

Warford is a familiar opponent; he and Cooley played in the final group at the Bill Egbers Memorial Tournament earlier this year.

Costas Panay of Eastlake and Nate Plaster of Gonzaga Prep tied for the first-round lead. Both shot 69.

TUMWATER — Kyle Ekkelkamp shot a 97 to tie for 30th; Max Hanson shot a 98 for sole possession of 32nd place at Tumwater Valley Golf Course.

Neither made the cut.

Hurricanes coach Jeff Droog said both golfers wanted to advance to the second day, but said they should feel proud about their multiple accomplishments for a young Mount Vernon Christian program.

Ekkelkamp, he noted, is a three-time state qualifier, and Hanson made the tournament twice.

“They both had great seasons,” he said.

Blake Kukulu of Ilwaco led with a first-round 73.
