Anacortes vs Liberty

Anacortes baseball player Ty Saunders has been named Northwest Conference MVP.

The senior hit .382 and posted five pitching wins in leading the Seahawks to a 13-11 record and deep into the bi-district 2A playoffs.

Saunders, an infielder who will play next season at the University of Portland, also scored 15 runs, had 11 RBI, a 1.49 earned-run average and 87 strikeouts.

He made the all-conference first team as a position player and the second team as a pitcher.

Also named to the first team were Sedro-Woolley seniors Michael Hall and Tyler Goss, and Burlington-Edison seniors Axel Wilhonen and Isaiah Shetler.

Hall hit .391 with 26 runs scored and 19 RBI, Goss .367 with 24 runs scored and 17 RBI, and Wilhonen .439 with 23 runs scored and 23 RBI.

Shetler, a pitcher, had five wins with 62 strikeouts and a 0.60 ERA.

Making the second team were Anacortes’ Ryan Rubalcava, Burlington-Edison’s Alex Thurmond, and Sedro-Woolley’s Cody Buchanan, Alex Hulst and Carter Trammell.

Sedro-Woolley’s Rob Davie was named coach of the year.

Bellusci leads conference picks

Anacortes senior outfielder Megan Bellusci has been named the Northwest Conference softball offensive player of the year.

Bellusci hit .732 with 47 runs scored and 33 RBI in leading the Seahawks to a 19-2 record and deep into the bi-district 2A playoffs.

Making the first team were Sedro-Woolley senior Riley Conn, Anacortes freshman Riley Pirkle, Burlington-Edison sophomore Gracie Shetler and Anacortes junior Lindsey South.

Conn hit .476 with 24 RBI, South .632 with 33 runs scored and 37 RBI, Shetler .621 with 30 runs scored and 37 RBI, and Pirkle .357.

As a pitcher, Pirkle had 17 wins, a 3.57 ERA and 118 strikeouts.

Making the second team were Anacortes’ Maddy Holmes, and Sedro-Woolley’s Kiah Trammell and Gracie Woiwood.

Anacortes’ Tom Swapp was named coach of the year.

Teams named academic champs

Three Skagit County teams have been named academic state champions by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

Having the highest grade-point averages for their sport in their state classification were the Burlington-Edison boys’ golf team (3.91, Class 2A), the Burlington-Edison girls’ golf team (3.97, Class 2A) and the La Conner girls’ track and field team (3.87, Class 2B).
