MOUNT VERNON — A boost from the bench Wednesday helped the Skagit Valley College women’s basketball team to a victory over Everett.

Starters Mieke Van Ess and Nani Garner scored 31 points between them, and reserves Kiah Charlie and Emily Toycen added a combined 24 points as the Cardinals got past the Trojans 77-72.

The Cardinals’ bench outscored Everett’s 32-0.

Van Ess led the Cardinals with 16 points, helped by a 6-for-7 performance at the free-throw line.

Garner hit four 3-pointers on her way to 15 points.

Charlie also hit four 3-pointers as she scored 14 points. Toycen scored 10 points. Katie Skipworth handed out 11 assists.

“It was nice to get league off on a positive note,” Cardinals coach Steve Epperson said.

Everett’s Serafine Balderas led all scorers with 28 points. She connected on eight of her 19 3-point attempts.

MOUNT VERNON — Everett’s Markieth Brown Jr., scored a game-high 31 points as the Trojans won. Phalon Maddox scored 19 points off the bench for Everett.

Ajani Chappell (13), Carmonte Jones (12) and Deondre Russ (11) each scored in double digits for the Cardinals.

Burlington-Edison graduate Caleb Sheldon added eight points and six rebounds.
