MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon boys' basketball team continued its winning ways Wednesday night.

The Bulldogs defeated Mariner 57-52 in the nonleague game, improving to 6-1 with their fifth straight win.

"This was a good team who we have played in the past in the Wesco 4A league," said Mount Vernon coach Roger Valentine. "They have been at the top of their league year in and year out."

Mount Vernon enjoyed a slim lead at halftime, but trailed by two points at the start of the fourth quarter.

"Our guys continued to play hard and found a way to regain the lead," Valentine said.

Free throws were a big reason why as the home team went 8-for-10 in the final frame.

Lucas Rodio came up just short of a triple double for the Bulldogs, finishing with eight points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks.

Quinn Swanson led Mount Vernon scoring with 16 points while Davari Davis scored 13.

"It is nice to see the improvement our team is making," Valentine said.
